The National Lottery Authority (NLA) says it has commenced huge empowerment program for disabled and less fortunate people across Liberia as a way of fighting poverty among the group.

The agency said, with support from government, the pilot project is currently benefiting disabled and less fortunate persons in five counties: Montserrado, Cape Mount, Grand Bassa, Margibi and Bomi.

The National Lottery Authority boss, Reginald Nagbe, told legislative reporters on Capitol Hill Monday that under the scheme government is empowering beneficiaries to own kiosk and run their own businesses.

He emphasized that twenty-five kiosks have been erected in targeted communities and turned over, along with cash, to beneficiaries to start their own businesses

The Director General underscored that, out of sympathy for the poor the Weah administration has approved US$75,000 this fiscal year to expand the program in leeward communities.

Touching on the President’s annual address and issues raised in the speech, the director said his attention was drawn mainly to appeals made by President George Manneh Weah for peace and harmony among Liberians.

Reginald Nagbe said the statement manifest the President’s preparedness to make Liberia stable after years of destructive and senseless reign of terror in the country.

He admonished fellow citizens to put aside political differences and join their leader in enhancing the fragile peace and reconciliation, which is badly needed.
