The Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, Cllr. Edward K. Goba, has lauded the President of the University of Liberia (UL) for launching the inclusion of the Computer Science Department in the UL curriculum.

Speaking on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at the launching of the University of Liberia’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences, Cllr. Goba express appreciation for the UL President, Dr. Julius Julukon Sarwolo Nelson, Jr., for the historic event.

The MOPT Deputy Minister for Administration said the new program included in the university’s field of studies for a bachelor of science degree in computer science is a milestone achievement and a giant step for information technology in Liberia.

He further noted that the UL will incorporate students who are eager to learn computer science, but cannot afford the cost of other private universities in the country.

Cllr. Goba said the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications will work with all information communications technology institutions to help enhance IT in the country, “because we at the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications are the sector’s head”.

“The President of the University of Liberia, Dr. Nelson, could not have selected a better time  than now to establish the computer science department,” he explained.

Also speaking at the program, the UL Vice President for Information Technology, Dr. Darren Wiltkins, said during the third and fourth year of the program students are required to open their own business so that they do not just graduate as technicians, but they are able to create jobs as entrepreneurs.

He however underscored the need for funding to help enhance the program to create the necessary environment that will equip students with practical skills.
