Intern Abbie Kamara at AML facilities

ArcelorMittal Liberia Young Professional Program (YPP) Intern, Abbie Yatta Kamara, has taken time to recount her first few weeks of internship journey at ArcelorMittal Liberia.

She is one of several highly motivated young graduates recruited by the company and assigned as Management Assistants in the Department of Corporate Services, which oversees the divisions of Communication, Estate, Transport, and Medical and Schools.

At the end of her assignment in the Communication Division, the enterprising young Liberian female reflected on her internship journey, highlighting how contributive ArcelorMittal Liberia continues to be in the cause of ensuring a better Liberia.

“I started my internship at the start of AML Learning Week (June 6—10, 2022), where I learned and improved my knowledge of team building, effective communication, leadership and its responsibilities, as well as the importance of modern technologies in the workplace.

“One of my major takeaways from Learning Week 2022 is the knowledge that having the right attitude to assist others without any expectation in return does not only improve the team’s progress, but it also helps to develop the team members’ humility; that a good leader puts people first, shares information through the proper channels effectively. Most importantly, I took away that the goal of an effective team is to beat its target consistently for continual success,” she noted.

For her second learning week, Abbie noted she was assigned to the AML Hospital in Buchanan, specifically the Registrar’s office, under the direct supervision of Solomon Nyantee.

At the hospital, she developed social and professional contacts and created a clean workspace and as well assisted with designing, printing, photocopying and filing daily pre-registration slips, nurse’s notes, doctor’s order slips, blood transfusion slips, etc.

“I also arranged documents into separate folders with their right labels for easy access. Then, I assisted with collecting and inputting data into various Excel workbooks, data such as the Primary Health Care, daily in-cash entry report, patients receipts entry, daily patients’ entry, and registering as well as coordinating employee’s rain gear distribution data entry.”

She also assisted with the master register’s data entry from the Government of Liberia (GOL).

In her third week, she was assigned to the Transport Division of Corporate Services, which manages light vehicles.

Here the young processional notes that she boosted her networking ability and gained essential background knowledge about the leadership and operation of the transport sector in ArcelorMittal.

“I learned that every month two drivers are assigned for utility purposes and are responsible to pick up and drop off students and staff during working hours, including an airport shuttle and swap trips between Buchanan, Gbarnga and Yekepa.

She recounts that, at one point, “I had the honor to represent Transport Department on a disciplinary committee in an accident case at the Health and Safety Department.”

In her fourth week she took an assignment at the Estates Division of Corporate Services, which she says is in charge of the canteen, accommodations, housing and the entire AML facilities maintenance and repair services.

At current, she seems to be “enjoying” the fifth week of her internship. She has now been assigned in the communications division, also a part of Corporate Services Department.

With the direct supervision of the department’s manager, Winston Daryoue, and Senior Communication Officer, Gbatemah Senah, Abbie Kamara believes she has gotten a practical insight into the workings of the department, specifically the daily media monitoring and distribution of internal and external news contents.

“With this experience” she explained, “I can safely say I now have basic knowledge of how the department of corporate services of AML works, which puts me in a comfortable position as a Management Assistant, and that I am having the best moments of my professional life, so far.

“Thanks to my mentor, Dr. Garfee T. Williams, for his professional mentorship, and the entire AML Learning & Development team,” she concluded.
