A cross-section of Nimbaians, including the Nimba Bar Association, Nimba Legislative Caucus, Nimba Christian Community, student community and youths have called on the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government, headed by President George M. Weah, to fill the gap that will be created by the retirement of Chief Justice Francis Korkpor in September 2022 by a Nimba person, in the best interest of the country’s democracy.
The appeal was made over the weekend in separate remarks during the honoring ceremony of Justice Korkpor by the Nimba Bar Association in Sanniquellie, Nimba County. Nimbaians, in a collective voice, called on President Weah to appoint another counselor from Nimba to be part of the Supreme Court Bench of Liberia. They said politically the county is strong in numbers in terms of population and, therefore, should not be absent from the Supreme Court Bench.
Representative Larry P. Younquoi, who represented the home district of the Chief Justice, said as the Liberian leader contemplates on who replaces Korkpor, the Nimba Legislative Caucus is unanimously hoping that the county will be prioritized.
“I am very proud to represent a district that has produced Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia with an impeccable character. Let the President allow another Nimba person to be on the Supreme Court Bench,” Representative Younquoi said. He told the gathering that Nimba cannot afford to lose that seat and, therefore, called on the President to think in Nimba’s direction for the replacement of Justice Korkpor. He maintained that the legacy set by Justice Korkpor cannot be easily eroded and or set by anyone.
Providing reasons for his call, Representative Younquoi said Nimba is demographically and politically sensitive and important, which should not be left unrepresented at such strategic platform of the government.
He further told the gathering that they, as leaders of the county, especially lawmakers, are watching the Weah-Taylor government with keen attention throughout the process and, at the same time, consulting with several people to ensure that the county’s population, which is its strength and power, is not overlooked.
Representative Younquoi thanked the Nimba Bar Association and partners, as well as Nimbaians, for bestowing such unique honor upon Justice Korkpor, whom he said is a proud son of district #8.
