The Liberia National Police (LNP) has investigated and charged a male vehicle operator, Sam Morris, for reckless driving resulting into deaths, injuries and property  damage, following the recent fatal road traffic accident that occurred along the ELWA-RIA Highway.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at about 1600hrs involving a white Renault truck with license #UN-0695, operated by Sam Morris, a Liberian resident of Omega Community, Paynesville, and owned by UNIDO, One UN House, Pan African Plaza, 1st Street, Sinkor, and 13 other vehicles.

The investigation established that the UN truck operator lost control and collided with five cars, five tricycles and three motorcycles, with a tricycle getting stuck under the truck. The truck and the tricycle burned after the collision.

As a result of the accident, two children, to be identified, left in the tricycle under the truck and got burned completely. The total of eleven persons, including six traffic police officers were involved in the accident. Four persons have been pronounced dead.

The Officers involved in the accident were CIP Wolubah Moore, Sgt. William Davis, Ptr. Abraham Kemokai, Sgt. Jacob Sumo, Ptr. Milton Pewee and Ptr. Emmanuel Gbowee. Gbowee was pronounced dead on arrival at ELWA Hospital, and his remains was deposited at the ELWA morgue.

According to a LNP press release, the rest of the officers are undergoing medical attention at the ELWA Hospital. “The remains of the two unidentified kids are deposited at JFK’s morgue, while an unidentified male victim was also pronounced dead and is at the ELWA morgue,” the release disclosed.

Meanwhile, the operator, Sam Morris, has been charged  with reckless driving resulting to deaths, injuries and property damage, in violation of Section 10.4 of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws of the Republic, and is awaiting court prosecution.
