Finance Minister, Samuel D. Tweah, says protest about salary increment will not move him politically.
The Minister of Finance and Development Planning said he is not frightened by protest for salary increment. He described the action of the aggrieved workers at the Ministry of Transport as politically motivated. The Minister told the protesters at the Ministry of Transport on Monday, April 3, 2023 that legitimate salary payment on time is a right of workers, and not demand for salary increment.
He further mentioned that he does not have the authority to put any employee on the government’s payroll without the knowledge of CSA or the Ministry of Finance team.
According to Minister Tweah, they do not have the fiscal space now to increase civil servants’ salaries. Minister Tweah maintained that it is their right to get legitimate salary on time, and not to protest for salary increment.
“You can’t demand for salary increment. If your salary is to be increased it must be done on a system-wise basis,” Minister Tweah asserted.
However, Minister Tweah promised to properly address their issue in a technical meeting with aggrieved workers of the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at the Ministry of Finance.
Meanwhile, the head of the aggrieved workers of the Ministry of Transport, Jasper White, said he and his technical team will work along with the finance and human resource office at the Ministry of Transport to prepare for the meeting with Minister Tweah on Wednesday. He did not, however, deny or confirm whether they will resume normal working activities at the Ministry of Transport tomorrow.
