His Excellency President George Manneh Weah has by Proclamation declared Tuesday, October 24, 2023 “United Nations Day”, to be observed throughout the Republic as a working holiday.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, the observance is in recognition of the priceless contributions of the United Nations to Liberia.

The Proclamation calls on all government ministries and agencies, international organizations, the United Nations Agencies near Monrovia, institutions of learning, and citizens in general to cooperate with the Ministry of Education in organizing appropriate programs befitting the occasion.

The Proclamation is in consonance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution (168(II) adopted October 31, 1947, declaring October 24 of each year as the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, to be observed as “United Nations Day”, and calls on Member States to cooperate with the United Nations in the observance of the day.

The United Nations General Assembly further adapted Resolution 2782 recommending that the United Nations Day be observed as an international holiday by member states.

According to the Presidential Proclamation, Liberia will join other member states to celebrate the 76th Anniversary of the United Nations Day under the theme, “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity”.

The Proclamation praised the United Nations Organization and its member states for their role in the rebuilding of Liberia following its civil crisis, for which the country remains most grateful.

Liberia, as a founding member and signatory to the charter of the august body, meaningfully benefits therefrom and continues to support all programs of the world body as an expression of its constant appreciation, particularly with emphasis on the operation of the United Nations Mission in Liberia, the Proclamation asserts.
