The Chief Administrator of the Haywood Mission Institute (HMI), Dr. Leo M. Simpson, has lauded President George Manneh Weah for graciously accepting defeat in the presidential run-off election.

According to Bishop Dr. Simpson, President Weah’s decision to accept defeat while the result of the election had not completely been announced by the National Elections Commission (NEC) should be commended by every Liberian.

Bishop Simpson made the assertion Monday at the Haywood Mission campus, Old Road. He noted that the decision of President Weah is the first of its kind in the history of Liberia—a sitting President accepting defeat without any pre-condition.

He stated that President Weah has set high standards for presidents in the sub-region and Africa at large to accept defeat graciously when they are defeated in a democratic election.

Bishop Simpson noted that President Weah has put Liberia on the world map by strengthening the democratic system in Liberia.

According to him, as a result of the President’s decision, Liberia remains peaceful and the people are carrying out their normal activities.

He noted that when some African leaders are defeated in elections they refuse to accept their defeat, but President Weah is a true democrat who has set a benchmark for others to follow, noting that Liberians should be proud of him.

Bishop Simpson asserted that the action of President Weah demonstrates a high degree of maturity, and a trend that could strengthen the democratic space in Africa.
