At LIS Confirmation Hearing: Zargo Proposes National Migration Policy, Others

Speaking at the confirmation hearing of the Commissioner Generals of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), the Commissioner General-designate (U-300), Stephen Zargo, told the Liberian Senate Committee on Security that if he and his team are confirmed, theywill propose the National Migration Policy.

  According to the LIS Commissioner General-designate, the intention of the proposed migration policy is to address the global security threat confronting the world today. 

  Zargo, a veteran security personnel with many years of experience, comes with high security momentum at the new position. He promised during the hearing that, in the next 52 weeks, there will be major transformation at the LIS.

  The new LIS boss-designate pleaded with the Senate Committee on Security for support to the LIS to revamp the Migration Information Analysist System (MIDAS) at the Roberts International Airport (RIA).

  The MIDAS was brought in at the RIA by the International Organization on Migration (IOM), but has been down for some years now.

  Looking at the prevailing security threat across the globe, the Commissioner General-designate he wants urgent approach in bringing it back to operation in the country.

  He pleaded with the Senate Committee on Security for increment in the salaries of immigration officers.According to him, some LIS officer are taking home US$130, which is a clear violation of the 2015 Decent Work Act.

  The LIS new boss spoke on a wide range of national security issues, and called on the government to provide more support to the workings of the LIS.

  Those appointed as Commissioner Generals of LIS are Stephen Zargo, Commissioner General-designate; Elijah F. Rufus, Deputy Commissioner General for Administration-designate, A. Kundukai Jeleiba, Deputy Commissioner General for Operation-designate; and Atty. Dickson R. Tamba, Deputy Commissioner General for Naturalization-designate.
