The Government of Liberia (GOL) has established a taskforce team to clean Monrovia city as part of the Boakai-Koung agenda on sanitation. The taskforce, named Inter-Government Agencies City Cleaning Taskforce, comprises of the Ministry of Public Works, Monrovia City Corporation, Paynesville City Corporation, Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation and the Liberia National Police (LNP).

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 in Monrovia during a press conference, Public Works Minister, Roland L. Giddings, said the taskforce’sestablishment is purposely to keep the city of Monrovia and its environs clean under the Unity Party-led government. He told journalists that the taskforce will effectively start work on April 1 with cleaning of the streets in the city. He called on every well-meaning Liberian to cooperate with the taskforce in order to change the city from a dirty city to a green and clean city. According to Minister Giddings, sanitation is part of the President’s agenda and, therefore, the establishment of the taskforce is in fulfillment of it.

When asked as to where the funding will come from, the minister said the city generates its own cash and will therefore shoulder the financing for the smooth running of the project. He indicated that the taskforce will remain effective until the city is completely clean, in line with the President’s agenda. He further called on the media to help in educating citizens on keeping the city clean, noting that cleaning the city and its environs is everyone’s business.

For his part, Monrovia City Mayor, John C. Siafa, vowed to robustly lead the city cleaning campaign in order to achieve the President’s agenda on sanitation. He called on all those with suggestions and ideas to contact his office for possible consideration in the interest of the country. Mayor Siafa emphasized that Liberians are not dirty people and, as such, they can change the country to a clean country like other African countries if everyone collectively works together. According to him, he will not be active in office until the President’s sanitation agenda is achieved within the six-year period.

For the LNP, the department of safety, John Saar, said the Liberia National Police (LNP) will fully work with the taskforce in keeping the city clean. He informed the public that keeping the city clean is everybody’s business and so all Liberians should get involved.
