An ECOWAS Commission Delegation visiting Liberia has met with post and Telecommunication Minister Sekou Kromah at his Carey Street office in Monrovia to discuss the future of the Amilcar Cabral cable project in the country.

The project was signed in April 2023 by member states, including the Gambia, Guneau-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, through their respective sector ministers.

As a perquisite for international agency support, project countries agreed to prepare and develop the Amilcar Cabral project to enhance connectivity in their respective countries.

Liberia is expected to contribute the sum of US$14.29 million as its share of capital investment in the joint and single deployment of submarine cable by all project countries.

Minister Sekou Kromah assured the head of the delegation, Sediko Douka, during the high-level meeting, of Liberia’s preparedness to work with the commission in achieving its goal of boosting internet connectivity in the country.

He explained that the new project will replace the ACE Cable consortium agreement with Liberia, which is expected to expire within the next three and a half years.

For his part, Sediko Douka, who is also ECOWAS Commissioner for infrastructure, Energy and Digitalization, agreed to work with Liberia in the formation of special project vehicle that will manage the construction of the Marine Cable and mobilize resources to help Liberia join the international cable network project.

The ECOWAS delegation climaxed it visit to the country with a courtesy call on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia.
