Representatives To ECOWAS Parliament Highlight Liberia’s Progress

The Liberian Parliament delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament has highlighted government’s strong commitment towards ensuring social justice for war victims in Liberian.

   The delegation has also pledged its commitment to liquidate outstanding community levy owed the ECOWAS Commission, as well as to ensure that its monthly levy proceeds are transmitted in a timely manner.

   The statement was contained in an annual report of the Liberian Parliamentary delegation presented to the 6th ECOWAS Parliament.

   Presenting the delegation’s report on July 9, 2024, the head of the Liberian delegation, Bomi County Senator, Edwin Melvin Snowe, also highlighted significant strides made by the Government of Liberia (GOL) to address social justice for war victims through what he called the passage of a joint resolution for the establishment of a war and economic crimes court in Liberia, which will  bring justice for those culpable of war and economic crimes In Liberia.

   The report also added that the creation of the office of the Ombudsman and the appointment of an Executive Director by the President, Joseph Boakai, are parts of the genuine steps government has shown in its efforts to ensure justice and address the culture of impunity in the country.

   According to a Senate press release, the Liberian delegation also presented an overview of the political, security, economic, and human rights situations of the country, as well as status of implementation of ECOWAS Texts, Notable ECOWAS Assistance, Protocol of Free Movement of Persons and goods and the protocol relating to community levy.

  The head of delegation also informed the ECOWAS gathering that the general state of the political situation remains stable under H.E President Joseph Boakai.

  He was however quick to note that drugs remain a major threat to the existence of the youthful population, which has serious security and health implications.

   At the same time, the Liberian delegation further highlighted that the medium-term economic outlook is promising, indicating that growth is projected to rise to from 5.3 percent in 2024, further 6.4 percent in 2025 and 2026, adding that the projection is conditioned on the expansion in agriculture, fishery, services, mining as well as energy, trade, transportation and financial services.

   Commenting on the human rights situation, the report highlighted that the government can account and boast of zero political prisoner in detention as it stands, noting that citizens are free to express their views without fear of prosecution.

   The Liberian delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament is represented by Senator Edwin M. Snowe (Head of delegation); Senator J. Alex Tyler Sr.; Representative Taa Wongbe; Representative Rev. Samuel Enders; and Representative Moima Briggs Mensah.
