–Wants Liberians, Int’l Community Rally Support
The Secretariat of the Liberian United for Justice and Accountability (LUJA), headed by McClean Renner, has hailed the appointment of Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi by President Joseph Boakai as head of the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court (WECC).
LUJA is a representative body of victims of Liberia’s decade of civil war-turned intellectuals.
In a release issued in Monrovia yesterday and signed by McClean, the group welcomed President Boakai’s establishment of the WECC and the appointment of renowned lawyer Cllr. Massaquoi as head of said office.
LUJA said it sees the WECC office as a great step toward ending a prolonged culture of impunity and the silence of justice for survivors and victims of Liberia’s period of senseless bloodshed.
The group said they believe that for peace to thrive after many years of atrocities, those who perpetrated mayhem and carnage must be made to account for their abuse of human rights in Liberia.
LUJA opined that if the culture of impunity is not broken by the strong arm of justice administered in a court of international standard, the post-war democracy will continue to be a train travelling on slippery hill, with a cord of victims tears tied to its rear pulling it from its intended course.
LUJA, at the same time, thanked President Boakai for Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi as the one to lead this search for justice and accountability, observing that over the years Cllr. Massaquoi has demonstrated integrity in his discharge of duty and respect for the rule of law.
LUJA said this display of excellence as a public counsellor leaves the group certain that the latter will do what is required to serve justice, which has long been delayed.
