The Liberian Senate has categorically dismissed the misleading information circulating on social media alleging that members of the Senate’s Banking and Currency Committee received US$250,000 to confirm Central Bank Executive Governor, Henry Saamoi
In a press release issued on Saturday, March 8, 2025, the Senate reminded those bent on spreading such unfounded disinformation of Article 54, which grants confirmation power to the Liberian Senate.
The Senate emphasized that, as a respectable body, it does not engage in or encourage any act of bribery, as it is the responsibility of the august body to ensure transparency and accountability in the country’s governance process.
Additionally, the Senate’s release acknowledged that since assuming leadership of the Liberian Senate, President Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence has instituted a series of reforms aimed at fostering a Senate that is open to the public to promote transparency and accountability in its transactions on behalf of the Liberian people.
As part of these reforms, each member of the Senate casts a recorded vote on critical decisions in plenary, such as the confirmation of nominees and other instruments. This replaces the old practice of confirmation decisions being made in executive (closed-door) sessions. These reforms also led to a system audit of the Senate, among other measures.
The release further stated that Pro-Tempore Lawrence’s leadership has increased public confidence in the Liberian Senate’s decision-making process. As such, it will not engage in any dubious acts that could undermine the progress made.
The Liberian Senate urged the public not to be carried away by unscrupulous individuals seeking to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of its members for personal gain.
