President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. on Tuesday addressed the opening of the 73rd Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), held at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town.

In his speech, the President reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to quality education and regional collaboration, emphasizing the role of WAEC in fostering standardized assessments and promoting academic excellence across West Africa. He lauded the Council’s contributions to education, particularly in ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability in student evaluation.

“As we gather here in Monrovia, we are reminded of the critical role that education plays in shaping the future of our nations,” President Boakai stated, pointing out that “Education is not only a pathway to knowledge but also an essential instrument of empowerment, economic growth, and social development.”

The Liberian Leader also highlighted the need for equitable access to education, increased investment in teacher training, and the integration of technology into learning to prepare students for the digital age.
A key focus of his address was a call for WAEC to adopt more inclusive examination policies, particularly for students with disability.

He urged the council to implement accommodations such as additional time, alternative formats, and accessible testing locations to ensure all students have a fair opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.
“An inclusive education system sends a powerful message: that we value diversity and are committed to ensuring that every citizen can contribute to our nation’s development,” he asserted, urging “Let us work together to make this vision a reality.”

The President commended educators, school administrators, and policymakers for their unwavering dedication to improving education in Liberia and the region. He called on all stakeholders to commit to strengthening the educational sector by ensuring equitable learning opportunities for all children, regardless of their backgrounds.

The 73rd WAEC Annual Council Meeting brought together education ministers, policymakers, and experts from across West Africa, with the aim to assess the progress and challenges in educational assessments and set new strategies for the future.

President Boakai concluded his speech with a call to action, “Together, we can create a more just society where every voice is heard, every dream is nurtured, and every child has the opportunity to succeed.”
