The Montserrado County Bar Association, through its Board of Advisors, has distanced itself from the recent statement issued by the President of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) that the Supreme Court overreached in its ruling in the House of Representatives’ Bill of Information.

Members of the Board of Advisors of the Montserrado County Bar Association are Cllr. Philip A.Z. Banks, III, Cllr. James E. Pierre, Cllr. Pearl Brown-Bull, Cllr. Lloyd Kennedy, Cllr. Bendu Clarke, Cllr. Angelique Weeks and Cllr. Sam Y. Cooper.

The association, which is Liberia’s oldest and largest county bar association, stated that the LNBA’s April 28, 2025 statement, in response to the April 23, 2025 Supreme Court ruling concerning the impasse at the National Legislature, was done without the knowledge, information nor invitation to consult prior to the issuance of the said statement.

According to a release issued by the bar on May 1, 2025, and signed by its head, Cllr. Sam Y. Cooper, the Montserrado County Bar Association contested that the Constitution of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) mandates that the Executive Council of the LNBA shall consist of the presidents of the bar of the fifteen counties and the elected officials of the LNBA.

“The Montserrado Bar Association advises that henceforth, before a president of the LNBA makes an official policy statement on behalf of the bar the Executive Council must discuss, agree and endorse such statement prior to its publication,” the release observed.
