A devastating fire broke out around 1:21 a.m. Thursday morning in Don Bosco community, New Matadi, while residents were asleep.

Sadly, an entire zinc shack abode, owned by Cecelia Momolu, was engulfed in flames. Tragically, only three persons survived, as four children lost their lives due to smoke inhalation and severe burns before rescue teams could reach them. The victims have been identified as Marcus Momolu, 12 years; Emmanuel Flomo, 8 years; Elizabeth Momolu, 6 years; and Lusu Kamara, 2 years.

According to the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS), they could not swiftly rescue the four children from the tragedy because there was no road access, which prevented firefighters from reaching the scene on time.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing on Thursday, May 8, 2025, LNFS Director, Col. G. Warsuwah Barvoul, said the response of fire authorities was timely, but was severely hampered due to the blockade of the alleyways leading to the affected building, making access extremely difficult.

“The government of Liberia (GOL) extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time,” Col. Barvoul sympathized.

Col. Barvoul strongly warned the public to refrain from the continued practice of constructing buildings on the alleyways, as this poses a serious risk to life and hinders emergency response.

Meanwhile, the LNFS boss has warned the public that, going forward, the government will not condone such actions and will take appropriate measures to prevent similar incidents.
