The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)-appointed Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Reginald Nagbe, is said to be wrapping up his activities at the entity, as his tenure expires July 15, 2025.

Nagbe was appointed by former President George Manneh Weah on June 14, 2021. He was subsequently confirmed by the Liberian Senate.

Upon his confirmation, President Weah officially wrote Nagbe on July 19, noting that based upon notification from the Liberian Senate of his confirmation, he was thereby appointed Director General of the National Lottery Authority effective Thursday, July 15, 2021.

The National Lottery Authority (NLA) was established by an Act of National Legislature on March 6, 2015, with the authority to regulate all games of chance within the Republic, including casino, sport betting, lotto games, scratch and win, raffle draw and promotional competitions. It is responsible to generate revenue for national development, educational opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWD), while upholding the highest standards of integrity and public service.

Like other integrity institutions, the director general of the entity holds a tenure of four (4) years.

Meanwhile, Director General Nagbe’s four-year tenure is due to expire on July 15—approximately thirty-two (32) days from now.

Unfortunately, appraisals of his activities over the past four years at the entity by independent institutions have not been favorable. He stands accused of depleting the entity’s accounts and not accounting for several vehicles belonging to the entity.

It is being speculated that his successor may find it difficult to put the entity back on track if the Boakai administration does not pay keen attention to his last days at the entity.

Meanwhile, observers are urging the Boakai administration not to leave Nagbe unchecked, as doing so could further damage the entity while Nagbe walks out without a trace. They observed that the NLA is a huge revenue-generating entity and, as such, Nagbe should give full account of his stewardship at the entity before his tenure comes to an end.
