UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Gilles Fagninou, has launched Back to My Classroom campaign in Liberia.

Regional Director Fagninou said his visit to Liberia is to reaffirm UNICEF’s steadfast commitment to supporting the Government of Liberia’s ambitious goal to enroll 250,000 out-of-school children by 2027.

He said the Back-To-My-Classroom campaign was launched through the Government of Liberia and partners to strengthen inclusive and equitable education systems, ensuring every child in Liberia has access to quality education.

He said this is a strong commitment from the government, but more have to be done and will require collective efforts.

The Regional Director’s visit continues through the week and includes policy meetings and project site tours in Montserrado and surrounding the rural areas.

“We’re thrilled to share more about the ‘Back-to-My Classroom’ campaign, a huge leap forward for children’s education and identity across the nation.

“This campaign is already driving change, with children being registered and local leaders rallying for better welfare for children nationwide. The Ministry of Education and its partners are determined to transform Liberia’s education system,” Regional Director Fagninou observed.

Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Director Fagninou emphasized the importance of education as a human right, noting that every child needs a quality education in Liberia.

At the same time, UNICEF Representative, Andrew Brooks outlined the trend of child-related indicators across education, health, social protection and child protection sectors. His insights revealed both significant challenges and areas needing urgent attention.

Brooks underscored the urgent need for continued investment and actions to safeguard the rights and well-being of every child in Liberia.

He highlighted UNICEF’s role as not just an advocate or advisor, but an active partner committed to working collaboratively with the Government of Liberia and partners to deliver tangible results for children.
