The Minister of information, Jerolimek M. Piah, has sharply criticized Liberians who are celebrating the United States’ recent suspension of immigration visas affecting 74 countries, including Liberia, describing such celebrations as “unpatriotic”.

Speaking during the Ministry of Information regular Press briefing on Thursday, January 15, 2025 Minister Piah insisted that the Unity Party government maintains strong ties with Washington and will not face punitive measures with the US government as the CDC government did, because the US will not sanction any of their government officials the way they sanctioned CDC officials.

According to him, opposition leaders and Media institution are in the habit of spreading misinformation, and warned media institutions against publishing false or misleading reports that could misinform the public.

“You depend on your family members to support you here in Liberia but are happy for the U.S. immigration visa pause,” he stated.

Piah noted that the visa suspension should be approached with seriousness and unity, rather than exploited for political or personal gains.

He said for several years many Liberians have participated in the Diversity Visa (DV) program, hoping to reunite with family members in the United States, but the visa pause has significant implications for these families, underscoring the need for a collective and constructive response from Liberians.
