Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, on Thursday, January 22, 2026, officially dedicated the Grand Gedeh County Referral Hospital on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., describing the facility as a major milestone that brings renewed hope to the people of southeastern Liberia.

Delivering remarks at the ceremony, the Vice President expressed deep appreciation to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Germany for their longstanding partnership and support to Liberia’s development, particularly in the health sector.

He also commended successive Liberian leaders whose sustained diplomatic engagement helped create the enabling environment for the realization of the project.

VP Koung specifically acknowledged former Presidents William R. Tolbert, Jr., Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and George Manneh Weah, as well as the late President Samuel K. Doe, noting that their respective administrations contributed to maintaining strong bilateral relations with Germany and ensuring the continued engagement of German development partners in Liberia.

The Grand Gedeh County Referral Hospital was constructed with support from Welthungerhilfe, a Germany-based humanitarian organization, in collaboration with German development cooperation.

The modern health facility is expected to expand access to advanced medical services and significantly reduce the need for patient referrals from southeastern Liberia to Tapita and Monrovia.

According to the Vice President, the hospital will provide critical relief to patients across the region and substantially strengthen Liberia’s healthcare delivery system.

He emphasized that the dedication of the facility reflects the government’s firm commitment to improving healthcare services and enhancing the overall well-being of the Liberian people.

“This hospital is named the Grand Gedeh County Referral Hospital, which means it belongs to you—the people of Grand Gedeh County and the entire southeastern region,” Vice President Koung said. “It is here to serve you and to save lives.”

He urged citizens to take collective ownership of the facility and ensure its proper care and maintenance for the benefit of present and future generations.

The Vice President also called on doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals assigned to the hospital to serve with diligence, professionalism, and compassion, placing the welfare of patients above all else.

VP Koung further conveyed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s warm greetings to the people of Grand Gedeh County and reaffirmed the President’s unwavering commitment to the county’s development.

He disclosed that during the upcoming “National Thank You Tour”, President Boakai will visit Grand Gedeh County, at which time newly procured “yellow machines” will be deployed to rehabilitate major roads and improve farm-to-market access.

The Vice President also assured residents that he would consult with the President to engage telecommunications providers—Lonestar MTN and Orange Liberia—to ensure reliable communication networks in and around the hospital, thereby enhancing service delivery and emergency response.

Several dignitaries, including the German Ambassador to Liberia, Dr. Jakob Haselhuber, and Grand Gedeh County Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely, also delivered remarks.

They underscored the importance of proper maintenance and sustainable management of the facility to ensure its long-term impact on healthcare delivery in the region.
