The Office of the Fula Governor of Liberia says it is concerned about trending social media posts regarding a group referred to as “National Fula Security of Liberia”, with claims that the group is a tribal militia or a terrorist group. These claims are far-fetched, biased, misleading and only intended to bring the Fula community to public disrepute.

According to the Governor’s office, “The Fula Security of Liberia is a voluntary group established in 2011, and involved with community service for the Muslim community mainly during the month of Ramadan (Fast Month). These individuals ensure that night prayers remain orderly, and work closely with the Liberia National Police (LNP) to ensure that worshippers arrive and leave various mosques peacefully and safely. They have a track-record of voluntarily escorting worshippers from the mosque to the point of boarding taxi cabs or kehkehs.

“As a law-abiding community, which has confidence in the Government of Liberia’s ability to handle the safety and security of the state, we are shocked by such outrageous claims, and urge all those involved in spreading such claims to stop immediately.”

The Governor’s office reiterated the Fula community’s commitment to the rule of law, and their confidence in the national security apparatus to cater to the safety of the state and its people, including the Fula people. “We assure the public that the Fula community will always remain peaceful and law-abiding, and that militia and terrorist groupings have not, and will not, be a part of the Fula community in Liberia,” the statement from the Governor’s office observed.
