ArcelorMittal Liberia has observed its 2026 Health and Safety Day across its operational sites in Buchanan, Yekepa, Gangra, and Tokadeh Mines, bringing together employees, contractors, and management under the theme, “Making Zero Happen: Zero Harm, Zero Excuses”.

The event featured street parades, in-door sessions, and recognition of employees for outstanding safety performance through certificates and gifts of appreciation. It also reinforced the company’s commitment to strengthening a workplace culture where safety is a shared responsibility at all levels.

Delivering a message on behalf of CEO Michiel Vandermerwe, Head of Special Projects Cllr. Boakai Paegar urged employees to make safety a daily habit beyond the workplace, emphasizing vigilance and collective responsibility. “Let us watch out for our fellow workers, let us watch out for ourselves,” he said.

In Yekepa, Training Manager Dawie Loots cautioned against rushing and unsafe work practices, noting that most workplace accidents are preventable when risks are properly identified and addressed. Internal Auditor Arnold Mufandaedza also reminded employees of their responsibility to return home safely each day, aligning with the “zero harm” goal.

Health and Safety Lead at the Concentrator, Angelique Myers-Jekula, reinforced the message, underscoring that every task must be carried out with full attention to safety standards.

The celebration also featured a lively performance by ADT Operator, Ellis Collins, known as “Mega-G”, whose original safety-themed music energized employees and added excitement to the Yekepa program.

The Health and Safety Day reaffirmed ArcelorMittal Liberia’s commitment to embedding safety as a core value across its operations.

ArcelorMittal places the safety and wellbeing of its employees and host communities at the very core of its global operations, treating it not as a compliance requirement but as a non‑negotiable operational priority. In Liberia, this commitment is even more pronounced: the company integrates rigorous safety standards into every stage of its mining and logistics activities, ensuring that staff are protected through training, modern equipment, and strict adherence to international best practices, while communities benefit from proactive engagement, emergency preparedness programs, and infrastructure designed with public safety in mind. By embedding safety into its corporate culture, ArcelorMittal demonstrates that sustainable growth and responsible mining are only possible when people and communities are safeguarded first.
