The leadership of the House of Representatives is expected to take immediate action on Monday following a formal communication from Montserrado County’s electoral district #5 Representative, Prescilla Cooper, calling for the Government of Liberia (GOL) to seek international assistance in the on-going investigation into the recent narcotics trafficking case.

In her communication to plenary, Representative Cooper urged the House to encourage His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. to immediately engage Liberia’s international partners to support the investigation, citing concerns that four of the five principal suspects reportedly connected to the alleged drug shipment are currently outside Liberia’s jurisdiction and their whereabouts remain unknown.

According to the lawmaker, the circumstances surrounding the case require robust international law enforcement cooperation to identify, locate, apprehend, and prosecute all individuals responsible. She noted that Liberia can utilize existing international mechanisms, including the United Nations system, INTERPOL, and bilateral and multilateral security partnerships, to strengthen the investigation.

Representative Cooper further emphasized that international technical, investigative, intelligence, forensic, and law enforcement assistance would reinforce the credibility, transparency, and effectiveness of the investigative process while ensuring that no suspect evades justice by crossing international borders.

She recalled President Boakai’s public commitment to treating the fight against illicit drugs as a national security priority, stating that seeking international assistance would demonstrate the government’s resolve to pursue every lead and hold all perpetrators accountable, regardless of their position or status.

The Montserrado County lawmaker described the case as more than an ordinary criminal investigation, asserting that it represents a critical test of Liberia’s commitment to combating transnational organized crime, strengthening the rule of law, safeguarding national security, and restoring public confidence in the country’s justice system.

Representative Cooper therefore requested the honorable plenary to adopt an appropriate resolution or otherwise communicate its position to President Boakai, encouraging the immediate engagement of international partners to assist in locating, investigating, apprehending, extraditing where appropriate, and prosecuting all individuals connected to the alleged narcotics trafficking case in accordance with national and international law.

The communication is expected to be considered by the House leadership during Monday’s sitting, after which appropriate legislative action will be determined.
