Public Works Alarms Over “Extreme Increase In Water Levels”
The Ministry of Public Works, through the office of the Acting Minister, Ruth Coker-Collins has expressed dismay over what it calls “extreme increase in water levels” along the Ganta—Sanniquellie Highway.
The ministry, through its assigned Supervision Consultant to the Project, Zutari (South Africa), had estimated that it will take approximately one week for the water to subside substantially for the road to be open again.
“In light of the aforesaid, motorists are advised that the road is not passable at Gbedin Town towards Sanniquellie after KM 17 due to the high water levels, thereby overtopping the road in the length of about 500m,” a press release from the Ministry of Public Works said.
“Meanwhile, the ministry informs the public that, as part of temporary measures, all goods and people are currently being transported across by means of boat, while others are commuting along the corridor through ArcelorMittal Liberia’s rail line to cross.
“According forecasts, further rains seem likely. Therefore, it might take more than one week for the road to be reopened,” the ministry’s release stated.
“The Ministry of Public Works reaffirms its commitment to the improvement of roads across the country, but says flooding situation is normal, depending on the region.”
