THE COUNTRY DIRECTOR of the Accountability Lab, Lawrence Yealu, has greatly differed with what the Government of Liberia (GOL) considers as a COVID-19 Response. Yealu sees the government’s strategy as somewhat not a strategic plan because, according to him, it has failed to holistically inculcate the broad spectrum of stakeholders, not to mention the Liberian media as well of the civil society to assist in containing the Coronavirus.

THE COUNTRY DIRECTOR made his observation on Monday, June 29, 2020 when, alongside other discussants, he addressed the Press Union of Liberia’s Edward Wilmot Blyden Forum at the YMCA Auditorium on Crown Hill, Broad Street, Monrovia. He spoke on the topic, “Best Approaches In The Fight Against Covid-19—A Look At The Social, Political and Economic Impact on Liberia”.

COUNTRY DIRECTOR YEALU observed that the failure of the government, through its Covid-19 Response Team, including the Ministry of Health (MOH) and National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) to develop a clear-cut strategic plan to clamp down on the pandemic further puts the nation and its people, including people of foreign nationalities, at more risk as the virus heightens in some parts of the country. He has therefore called on the government to see reason to craft a COVID-19 strategic plan to defeat the pandemic and stop it from any further spread in Liberia. Yealu is the first stakeholder to come out calling for the broad inclusion of other important sections of society in the government’s effort to contain the COVID-19 outbreak, but the surge of the disease in counties across the nation says that other stakeholders can be expected to follow in this direction.
