Acting NEC boss, Cllr. Teplah Reeves, certificates Nimba County’s Senator-elect, Jeremiah Koung

The National Elections Commission (NEC) has certificated Senator-elect, Jeremiah Koung, as winner of the December 8, 2020 special senatorial elections in Nimba County. Senator-elect Koung received his certificate on April 13, 2021, following the reading of the mandate from the Supreme Court authorizing the National Elections Commission (NEC) to take full jurisdiction of the matter. Senator-elect Koung is a member of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR).

Presenting the election certificate, the Acting Chairperson of NEC, Cllr. P. Teplah Reeves, said, “While we celebrate the end of a process and the determination made by the Liberian people as to who represent them in the Liberian Senate is upheld, the Commission assures all Liberians of its Constitutional mandate and commitment to conduct free, fair, credible and transparent elections throughout the country.”

The Acting Chairperson of NEC, Cllr. Reeves reminded all of Liberians that election is everybody’s business, and it is therefore binding on all Liberians to ensure peaceful elections at all times. The Acting Chairperson of NEC wants all Liberians to commit themselves to the rule of law as “the surest way to sustaining our peace and democracy in Liberia”.

Responding, Senator Jeremiah Koung commended the NEC for conducting the December 8, 2020 special senatorial elections extremely well, despite the limited resources. The election, he said, was conducted successfully.

The Nimba County senator-elect is calling for electoral law reform. He is also calling for unity amongst all citizens of Nimba County, including those who did not win the election, after what he calls “a long legal battle”.
