President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has officially opened the 2025 National Agriculture Fair (NAF) in Gompa City, Nimba County, describing agriculture as the backbone of Liberia’s progress and a direct path to stronger communities and a stronger nation.
Speaking to government officials, traditional leaders, farmers, partners, and citizens, President Boakai said the fair is more than an annual gathering; it is a reflection of the resilience and creativity of the Liberian people.
“Our soil is so fertile that if you pluck your finger in it and leave it there for a little while, it might germinate,” the President remarked, highlighting the natural advantages Liberia possesses.
The President noted recent improvements in the national economy, citing a World Bank report showing 4.0% economic growth last year, with agriculture playing a major role. The sector grew by 3.4%, driven by increases in rubber production (18%) and rice yields (8.5%).
“These results come from better conditions for farmers, improved roads, and policies that put producers at the center,” President Boakai said, warning, however, “Still, growing food is only half the story. Farmers must be able to move what they grow.”
President Boakai maintained the importance of feeder roads in reducing transport costs and opening rural communities to opportunities. He referenced the recent launch of rehabilitation work on 144 kilometers of feeder roads in Lofa County, noting that similar projects will follow across the country.
“Better roads mean stronger markets, and stronger markets mean better lives for families,” he said.
The Liberian Leader also spoke about plans to improve access to modern farming tools and services. By 2026, he disclosed, Liberia is expected to have 13 mechanization service centers available to farmers nationwide.
“These centers will help reduce the heavy labor carried mostly by women,” he said, noting further that “Mechanization is about improving daily life, increasing production, and helping families earn more.”
President Boakai called on Liberia’s young people to see agriculture as a modern field powered by innovation. He referenced opportunities in digital farming, agribusiness, logistics, and climate-smart practices.
“Agriculture today is about technology, data, and new ideas,” he said, adding that “There is space for young leaders to step forward.”
The President thanked Liberia’s development partners, including IFAD, FAO, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, WFP, and the EU, for their continued support. He added, however, that Liberia’s agricultural future must be led by Liberians.
“We must eat what we grow, support our own producers, and trust our own potential,” he stated.
Declaring the National Agriculture Fair 2025 officially open, President Boakai urged citizens to stay focused on building a productive and food-secure Liberia.
“When agriculture grows, Liberia grows. When farmers prosper, Liberia prospers. And when we feed ourselves, we free ourselves,” he avowed.
The President closed with his signature national appeal: “Think Liberia, Love Liberia, Build Liberia.”
