The Japanese Counterpart Value Fund Secretariat (JCVF), through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has announced the arrival of another consignment of the Japan-donated rice, weighing 1,500 metric tons, to Liberia.

According to a Foreign Ministry release, the rice will be monetized under the Japanese Grant Commodity Program to support the government’s socio-economic development projects. The consignment of rice is expected to arrive on Friday, February 17, 2023 at the Freeport of Monrovia.

It can be recalled that on October 18, 2021 the Government of Liberia (GOL) and the government of Japan signed an exchange of note, titled, “KR Food Aid 2021”, for 250,000.000 Japanese yen for the provision of rice.

The release further stated that the expected consignment of rice will be sold at the Fouta Corporation in Vai Town, with the support of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA), at the wholesale and retail prices of US$13.75 and US$14.50, respectively.

According to the release, the Japanese donated rice is 5 kilos more than the regular 25kg presently on the Liberian market.    “Meanwhile, the general public is hereby advised to report to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Inspectorate Division or the Japanese Counterpart Value Fund Secretarial at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs anyone selling the Japan-donated rice above its stipulated prices for quick intervention, to eschew further profiteering and cheating,” a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
