The Liberia National Commission on Small Arms has fined and cleared Sergeant Nathan Brooks Johnson, a Liberian born member of the United States Army, for procedural wrong relating to the possession of firearm while traveling to Liberia.

Recent media reports carried that Sergeant Nathan Brooks Johnson, 33, was arrested on Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Roberts International Airport in possession of firearm (pistol), in his personal luggage during a routine security check.

The case drew the attention of the Liberia National Police (LNP), the United States Embassy and the National Commission on Small Arms, amongst others.

Following thorough investigation, it has been established that Sergeant Johnson is a bonafide member of the United States Army, but process of possession of the firearm during his travel to Liberia did not fully meet the requirements contained in the regulations of the Small Arms Commission and other firearm protocols of Liberia, though no criminal or deliberate illegal intent has been established.

His Geneva Convention Identification Card shows that Sergeant Johnson is a serving sergeant (E5) in the United States Army, with an assignment valid up to May 2026.

With violation of the rules and laws governing firearm possession and declaration, the Liberia National Commission on Small Arms, though with no deliberate criminal or illegal intent established, has fined Sergeant Nathan Brooks Johnson US$200 (two hundred United States dollars) for his failure to follow the proper procedures governing the possession of firearms.

Sergeant Johnson has paid the required fine and is poised to take delivery of his assigned firearm/pistol following the required formalities by the Liberia National Police.

Sergeant Nathan Brooks Johnson is a Liberian-American, a native of Maryland County, who, from a decent family and Christian upbringing, ceased a golden opportunity to join the United States Army, and is making exploits in his career and the work of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The family of Sergeant Johnson has commended the Small Arms Commission, the Liberia National Police, US Embassy and other relevant authorities for the professional manner in which they have handled the matter.
