Former Montserrado County’s senatorial candidate in the 2023 general and presidential elections, Chernor Jalloh, has strongly condemned the recent acts of violence at the Capitol and called on the state to uphold its responsibility to protect the Constitutional rights of its citizens. Jalloh also urged all security agencies to adopt professionalism and restraint in their engagements, especially when dealing with peaceful citizens exercising their democratic rights.
Jalloh observed that on December 17, 2024, a peaceful gathering organized by “The Concerned Citizens for the Respect of Constitution, Democracy, and the Rule of Law” was met with unwarranted and brutal actions by state security forces. According to him, these forces failed to exercise the high level of restraint necessary in handling the situation, leading to injuries of several citizens. “This is a grave violation of the rights enshrined in the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which guarantees every Liberian the right to peaceful assembly and free expression,” he stated.
He however implored the citizenry to remain peaceful and steadfast in their quest to exercise their Constitutional authority, emphasizing that violence and unrest can never be the solution to the challenges the nation faces. “Let us continue to champion democracy through lawful and peaceful means, as prescribed by our Constitution,” he added.
The ex-senatorial candidate expressed empathy regarding the tragic fire incident that occurred in the Joint Chambers of the Legislature on the morning of December 18, 2024. He said the unfortunate incident not only threatens the operation of the legislative body but also raises critical questions about the safety and security measures in place at such vital institutions.
He called for a full-scale, transparent investigation into the fire incident to determine its cause and to ensure measures are put in place to prevent future occurrences. He insisted that the investigation must be guided by the principle of accountability, with sincerity and fairness in line with the Constitution.
“In these challenging times, let us remain united as a nation and committed to the values of democracy, justice, and peace. The path forward requires a collective effort to uphold the rule of law and to safeguard the rights and freedoms of all Liberians,” ex-senatorial candidate Jalloh further observed.
