Former Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has criticized the Boakai-Koung administration over its brutal response to protesting students of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, which she said raises questions about their commitment to democracy and the welfare of the citizenry.

The former Vice President stated that the MCSS students’ protest highlights the pressing issues they face in their educational journey, but despite their peaceful demonstration they were met with teargas and harassment by the Liberia National Police (LNP), sparking widespread concern.

She indicated that the incident is particularly troubling, given Liberia’s history of student protests. According to her, government forces engaging in brutal exchange with protesting students have sparked significant political change in the nation’s history, including the downfall of the Tolbert and Taylor regimes.

Ex-Vice President Howard-Taylor maintained that the current government’s response to the students’ protest raises questions about their commitment to democracy and the welfare of their citizens.

“The students’ demands for better education, living standards, and opportunities are legitimate and deserving of attention. Instead of resorting to force, the government should engage in dialogue with the students and address their concerns,” she observed.

“This is what the rescue mission is expected to do, not arrest, tear gas and harass innocent students,” she emphasized.

She underscored the importance of government prioritizing the needs of its citizens, particularly the youth, who are the future of the nation.
