Dock Workers Union has welcomed the appointment of veteran trade unionist, Theressa Vaskinda, to the minimum wage board. The union said it is convinced that the presence of Vaskinda on the newly constituted board will help improve their relationship with the government.
Dock workers President, Moses Sheriff, said the appointee will bring to the job a wide range of experience, needed to make the board serviceable to the people.
Speaking to the Hot Pepper at his Freeport of Monrovia office on Wednesday, Sheriff said the preferment of Vaskinda manifests the President’s readiness to appoint qualified individuals to positions of trust in his government.
He emphasized that, as a versatile trade unionist, widely respected in trade union circles, the appointee will perform her duty with diligence and credibility.
The Dock Workers Union President also underscored the need for government to consider the appointment of a member of the dock workers leadership to represent the group at the National Port Authority (NPA) Board, in line with a precedent set some time ago.
He explained that the presence of the dock workers leadership on the Board of Directors of the entity will further strengthen relationship with the management.
The minimum wage board was constituted recently by President George Manneh Weah following the passage of the Decent Wage Bill by the Liberian Senate.
