In House Impasse: US Embassy Sends Second Warning; Reemphasizes Respect For Rule of Law

The United States Embassy has sent its second warning to members of the House of Representatives to show respect for the rule of law since the fight for political supremacy began on Capitol Hill.

Over the weekend, the US Embassy underscored that it is monitoring the current situation on Capitol Hill, and wants to see Liberia’s political processes play out peacefully and with respect for the rule of law.

The embassy emphasized that Liberians expect their leaders to uphold democracy and its practices, to include one that allows for open and transparent political processes and peaceful debate.

“We urge all parties to maintain peace. It is important that leaders show unity. Violence is never the answer, and it serves no one’s interest. We strongly urge both sides to reach compromise, so the important work of the Legislature can continue for the Liberian people,” the US embassy observed.

The embassy added that maintaining a democracy is never easy and there will certainly be tough times, but the key is learning from the missteps and remaining steadfast in knowing there is no place nor benefit to resorting to violence. “We remain confident that whatever differences political parties and individual politicians may have they can come together to address them through direct and peaceful engagement for the good of the nation,” the embassy noted.

It can be recalled that the U.S. Ambassador, Mark Toner, on Monday, November 25, 2024, sent out the first warning to the lawmakers when he met and held discussions with the former President of Liberia, Ambassador George M. Weah.

During the meeting, Ambassador Toner emphasized that the United States wants to see Liberia’s political process play out peacefully and with respect for the rule of law, and now more than ever Liberia’s leaders, past and present, need to show unity.
