The Township of Johnsonville is one of the oldest townships in the Republic of Liberia (RL). It was established on March 8,1887. The Township of Johnsonville has had many commissioners, but not much tangible in terms of addressing the needs of the township since its establishment. Currently, Johnsonville Township is headed by a young Liberian who was born in the township.
Oliver Varney, Commissioner, Johnsonville Township, is said to be making headway in terms of addressing major issues confronting the well-being of the township, such as land crisis, law, as well as the construction of the first town hall within the township.
When asked about the source of funding for the town hall’s construction, the Township Commissioner responded as saying that the funds come directly from the Johnsonville cemetery.
According to him, US$150 is charged per grave site at the Johnsonville cemetery. When questioned about national government financial support, Commissioner Varney stated that the Government of Liberia (GOL) is yet to provide the necessary funding for the township.
He used this medium to call on the district’s Representative and the senators of Monsterrado County, as well as other officials of government for assistance to complete the township’s town hall building. The town hall building has offices to accommodate the township commissioner and his staff. He praised President George Weah for a job well done in the entire township and its surrounding.
Commissioner Varney noted that Johnsonville Township is becoming the hub for commercial activities. He applauded the CDC led-government for the pavement of several roads within the township.
