LACC To Investigate Alleged US$15M Off-Budget Spending

The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has assured Liberians of investigating the alleged US$15 million off-budget spending by the government.

The Chairperson of LACC, Alexandra Zoe, said the commission has been made aware of the allegation of off-budget spending by the government, which is alarming. Zoe made the statement Monday at the LACC head office in Congo Town.

She asserted that the commission will investigate the matter, consistent with its mandate to promote transparency, accountability and good governance. She asserted that the commission takes the allegation seriously.

Zoe pointed out that the off-budget expenditure, if confirmed, can undermine public trust in the governance process, weaken fiscal discipline, and pose risks to the country’s financial integrity.

Chairperson Zoe explained that the public can be assured that LACC has commenced a preliminary review of the allegation, which will be followed by a comprehensive investigation to determine the accuracy of the claim, establish accountability, and ensure that proper legal procedures are followed.

According to her, LACC is committed to conducting investigation with utmost transparency and independence throughout the process.

“We will engage with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and other oversight institutions, to ensure a thorough and fair inquiry,” she maintained.

The LACC boss explained that, as an institution charged with safeguarding public resources, LACC assures the public that no stone will be left unturned in this matter, and that if evidence of wrongdoing is found the necessary legal actions will be taken, such as recommending sanction, prosecution, and other corrective measures.

She urged the public, media, and all stakeholders to allow the investigation to proceed without undue speculation or assumption. “Let us collectively uphold the principle of due process, ensuring that all findings are based on verifiable facts and evidence,” she noted.

Chairperson Zoe disclosed that the LACC remains steadfast in its mission to combat corruption in all forms.

She lamented that any allegation of financial mismanagement will be met with the full force of the law “as part of our broader efforts to promote accountability and safeguard public funds”.
