As the 2019/2020 budget year draws closer, the Director General of the Liberia Broadcasting System, Ledgerhood Rennie, has called on the government to support the seven sub-stations of LBS across the country because the national broadcaster covers 95% of the country, broadcasting from satellite stations in seven of the regions of the country.
During his assertion, Director General Rennie stated that the LBS has seven sub-stations in seven of the regions of the country: Bong, Lofa, Grand Gedeh, Maryland, Sinoe, Bomi and Grand Bassa.
Speaking to a team of legislative reporters during his appearance at the Capitol, the LBS boss emphasized that the sub-stations have not been captured in the present budget, especially the fuel for operation, and the management team of LBS is appealing to the National Legislature and the government to consider them because if they are not on air that means the rest of Liberia will be cut off in terms of communication. It is the fundamental Constitutional right of the people of Liberia to have access to public information,” Rennie stated.
Outlining difficulties in information dissemination at the state-run radio station, Rennie called on the National Legislature to put money in the budget to support LBS, in order to enable the station to operate smoothly. “Entirely, we are talking about close to two hundred and ten thousand dollars. Those sub-stations burn at least six hundred gallons of gas a month. We are also begging the Legislature to look at the plight of our correspondents across the country. Policymakers wake up every morning and Listen to radio and hear these correspondents reporting on various happenings in Liberia,” he noted.
