The Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Sierra Leone has reported an alleged coup plot in that neighboring country involving several senior military officers.
In an official communication to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Charge d’Affaires of the Liberian embassy in Sierra Leone, Roland Nah Johnson, said, “According to a Sierra Leone Police press release, certain individuals have been suspected of planning to undermine the peace and tranquility of the state and unleash violence on peaceful citizens of Sierra Leone.”
Johnson said the police release further explained that the suspected army officers, who have already been arrested, were planning “to use purported peaceful protest between 7th to 10th August 2023 as a guise to unleash violent attacks against state institutions and peaceful citizens”.
In the release issued Monday, July 31, 2023, as reported by Premium Times, the police disclosed that the suspects are assisting the police with the investigations.
The police expressed disappointment, noting that despite continued efforts to consolidate Sierra Leone’s “hard won peace and democratic gains”, some individuals at home and abroad continue to undertake actions meant to derail the peace and tranquility of the country.
Meanwhile, the Liberian embassy in Sierra Leone has assured that it will continue to provide update on the related development as investigation continues.
