LLA Holds Women Land Rights Seminar

The Liberia Land Authority (LLA) has begun a three-day seminar on Liberian women rights to own land in the country.

The seminar, which has been funded by the Swedish Mapping and Cadastro and Land Registration Authority, is aimed at training participants on women’s rights on land and properties across the country.

According to the Acting Coordinator of the Gender Unit, LLA, Olivia David, the seminar will address and erase the negative mindset that women do not have the right to own land in Liberia.

David made the disclosure Wednesday in an interview shortly after the opening ceremony took place at a local hotel in Sinkor.

She added that the deliberation will focus on the national and international legal instruments that promote and protect the rights of women on land and property in the nation.

She asserted that the topics to be discussed are the promotion of gender and women’s land rights and gender-based violence—its causes and impact.
David emphasized that the participants, who are all LLA employees, were drawn from the 15 political sub-divisions of Liberia.

She pointed out that Liberian women have been marginalized over the years with regard to land-related issues based on custom and traditional practices.

She maintained that creating awareness and providing sensitive education on the rights for Liberian women to own land will go a long way in protecting women and children, whose right to own land have been denied over the years.

David emphasized that the LLA will embark on a major awareness campaign across the nation to ensure that women actively participate in the process to address the misconception about women and denying them from owning land in Liberia.
