The plenary of the House of Representatives has summoned the ministers of Finance, Justice, Public Works, Public Procurement Concession Commission (PPCC) and the National Road Fund (NRF) to appear before the full body to provide updates and clarity on a US$100 million Investment Loan implemented by East International Road Construction Company.
Plenary reached the decision Tuesday, February 18 during its 9th Day Sitting (1st quarter) of the second Session after a communication from Representative Dorwohn Twain Gleekia, requesting his colleagues to invite relevant authorities to give comprehensive information on the loan given to EAST International for the construction of the ELWA-RIA Highway.
In his letter, Gleekia asserted that it is prudent that the members of the august body are furnished with all necessary details of the loan because it will be repaid by the Liberian taxpayers. Dorwohn Twain Gleekia is the Representative of electoral district #6, Nimba County.
In the interest of transparency and accountability, the Nimba lawmaker said he wants information on the total amount received so far from the $100 million loan, the amount that has been utilized for road construction to date and a copy of the official bank statement of the loan account for verification and financial clarity.
“Given the significance of this project to national development, it is crucial that the Legislature remains informed about its financial progress and execution. I trust that your office will facilitate the timely provision of this information to ensure proper oversight and public accountability.” Representative Gleekia stated.
Following the reading and floor discussion, the House’s plenary agreed through a motion that the ministries of Finance, Justice, Public Works, PPCC and NRF appear next Tuesday, February 25 to provide detailed information on the status of the US$100 million loan taken by the Government of Liberia (GOL) on behalf of East International Construction Company for the ELWA-RIA Highway road construction.
