His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Thursday, August 15, 2024 constituted a committee of eminent organizations to recruit and vet candidates that will lead the Office of the War and Economic Crimes Court.
The Office of War and Economic Crimes Court was established pursuant to Executive Order #131 and seeks to put in place the modalities and mechanisms to ensure the setting up of a Special War Crimes Court for Liberia and an Anti-Corruption Court.
Institutions named to the Search and Vetting Committee include the Ministry of Justice as Chair, the National Civil Society Council of Liberia, a national NGO focused on transitional justice, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations Office in Liberia, the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR), the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), the Inter-Religious Council of Liberia and the African Union Mission to Liberia.
The committee has been mandated by the President to recruit, vet and recommend to him three candidates with proved integrity who are also well-versed in Liberian Constitutional and criminal law, and capable of working with the international community and the Liberian public in developing appropriate mechanisms, procedures and processes attending the establishment of a war and economic crimes courts for Liberia.
The President’s decision to reconstitute the leadership of the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court stems from his desire to ensure that the process leading to the establishment of war and economic crimes courts in Liberia is subjected to open and broad-based public scrutiny.
