President George Manneh Weah has given US$100,000 to the victims of the Waterside fire disaster. Several stores and residential homes were destroyed down Waterside as a result of a tanker truck gutting fire.
The US$100,000 cash was presented by the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Nathaniel McGill, to the organized team of the fire victims, headed by the President of the Fula Business Association of Liberia (FBAL), Mohammed Maja Barrie, held at the Monrovia City Hall on Friday, August 27, 2021.
Minister McGill stated that President Weah promised to identify with the fire victims when he visited the disaster area recently.
According to him, the presentation is President Weah personal contribution to help the fire victims to start their businesses again.
He maintained that Liberians should always put measures into place to prevent fire disaster across the nation.
Minister McGill urged the fire victims to manage the money wisely to ensure that their businesses are sustained.
For his part, the Mayor of the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Jefferson Koijee, said the Aminata and Son Incorporated should meet up with its obligation to fire victims to help alleviate their plight.
Mayor Koijee stated that the plight of the fire victims is huge, and the contribution of Aminata will go a long way in strengthening the victims.
He called on Liberians as well as local and international organizations to come to the aid of the fire victims.
Also making remarks, the Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency, Henry Williams, said President Weah has demonstrated his compassion to the disaster victims through the US$100,000 assistance. Director Williams stated that the assistance should be distributed to the victims to avoid confusion.
Meanwhile, the President of FBAL, Mohammed M. Barrie, said the business community thanks and appreciates President Weah for the gesture.
Barrie described the move of the Liberian Leader, coming and helping the business community, as a dream to him. He stated that no president in the history of Liberia has ever done such a thing like this before; this is the first time for the President of Liberia to present a gesture of US$100,000 to business people affected by fire.
