Deputy Public Affairs Minister-designate, Jarlawah Tonpo

The President of the Republic, H.E. Dr. George Manneh Weah, has nominated Jarlawah Tonpo as Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICAT).

Tonpo, named early Thursday, June 24, 2021, replaces former Deputy Minister, Eugene Fahngon, who was relieved of his duties on Wednesday night.

Currently, Tonpo serves as Director of Press and Public Affairs at the Liberian Senate. He holds Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communication and master of arts degree in international relations from the University of Liberia, and is a master’s candidate in public administration at the University of Liberia.

The nomination is subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

On Wednesday, June 23, 2021 President Weah relieved, with immediate effect, Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs, Ministry of Information Culture and Tourism (MICAT), Eugene Fahngon, of his post.

Fahngon’s removal is a result of his spreading false information regarding the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, currently ravaging the country.

The President has warned that he will not hesitate to take similar action against any other official of government engaged in activities that undermine established government policy.
