Saudi Arabia Undertakes Green Initiative

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has noted that it is initiating an ambitious national program, which aims to improve the quality of life and protect future generations. The initiative includes several goals, such as increasing the level of vegetation cover, reducing carbon emissions, combating pollution and land degradation, and preserving marine life.

The initiative will include a number of ambitious initiatives, but the most prominent are: cultivation of 10 billion trees within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; reduction of carbon emissions by more than 4% of global contributions; a plan for renewable energy projects that will raise the share of clean energy for energy production in the Kingdom from 0.3% to 50% by 2030.

The Green Middle East Initiative

According to information, this is an initiative for the region that aims to coordinate efforts and keep abreast of regional and international developments, which the Kingdom launches as a regional roadmap to contribute significantly to achieving global goals to confront climate change through various ways, such as enhancing the efficiency of hydrocarbon technologies in the region and launching the largest reforestation plan in the world, which aims to plant 50 billion trees in the Middle East region.

The Middle East Green Working Mechanism

This will be in partnership with sister countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Middle East countries, and in cooperation with all allies from states and organizations.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will also hold a yearly summit, called the “Green Middle East Initiative”, to be attended by world leaders, ministries and officials in the environmental field to discuss the details of the initiative and the mechanism for their implementation. It hopes to start work on the initiative starting from the fourth quarter of 2021 and over the next two decades.

“We are fully aware of the challenges facing the region from the lack of resources, financial, technical, and geographical difficulties. Therefore, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will work in partnership with the countries of the region to discuss mechanisms and opportunities for financing initiatives for countries with low resources and share technologies and experiences between countries to reduce carbon emissions resulting from oil production in the region, develop innovative methods of irrigation using recycled water and rain, etc., and find other solutions, such as planting trees suitable for the region that depend on irrigation for a period of 3 years only, which natural irrigation is sufficient to grow.
