Montserrado County Senator, Abraham Darius Dillon, has brought to the attention of the Liberian Senate the questioned citizenship of Cllr. Ndubusi Nwabudike, who was recently denied to head the National Elections Commission (NEC), but is still heading a major graft institution, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).
Since President George M. Weah nominated Cllr. Nwabudike to head the NEC, the counselor’s Liberian citizenship has been questioned. Because of the dark cloud that hanged over his naturalization documents, Nwabudike could not be confirmed by the Senate.
But upon his failure to pass the Senate’s scrutiny, Nwabudike went back to the LACC as Chairman, and is quietly running the graft institution, unhindered.
As it is said, “Ninety-nine days for rogue, one day for master,” so it is with Cllr. Nwabudike and his service with the Liberian government in the midst of his questioned citizenship.
In a communication written by Senator Dillon to the President Pro Tempore on June 9, 2020, the Senator said, “I wish to draw your attention to the matter of Mr. Ndubusi Nwabudike, whose nomination to head the National Elections Commission was subsequently withdrawn by President George M. Weah following rigorous scrutiny by the Senate. During his confirmation hearings, Mr. Nwabudike’s alleged Liberian citizenship was called into question.”
Senator Dillon, who has been hailed along with Senator Varney Sherman for thoroughly interrogating Cllr. Nwabudike during the Senate hearing and for saving the image of the Liberian government, said the purpose of his communication to the Senate is to draw the attention of the Senate to Part IV Section 6.3 of the Act creating the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), requiring that only citizens of Liberia are qualified and eligible to serve on the Commission.
“Mr. Pro Temp, we hold strongly that Mr. Nwabudike, a citizen of Nigeria by birth, has not demonstrated or proven to be a Liberian and manner of acquisition of Liberian citizenship, as he claimed before this august body during his confirmation hearings,” Senator Dillon’s communication read.
He called on his colleagues to ensure that the proper and appropriate measures are taken to uphold, protect and defend the integrity and credibility of the LACC from being abused and violated.
