Stella Maris Polytechnic University (SMPU) on Friday, October 28, 2022 graduated 606 candidates from its five (5) colleges for associate and bachelor’s degrees under the theme, “Dream to Learn Well! Learn so as to Serve Well”.
Serving as the 23rd commencement convocation speaker, the United States Ambassador to Liberia, Michael A. McCarthy, urged the graduates to serve well in order to make the difference in society.
Ambassador McCarthy underscored that education takes a great deal of sacrifice and, as such, they should serve in the interest of the public.
According to him, Liberia is a country—a rich country—but remains one of the poorest ten (10) countries in the world where impunity lives, warlords have turned into elected politicians, thousands of civil war atrocities gone unpunished and corruption goes unchecked because of not serving well.
He lamented that true liberty cannot be achieved with the elite ruling class suppressing the dream of the population, noting that democracy is a never-ending work-in-progress. “It is the net result of each citizen constantly asking, ‘What can I do for my country?’” he said. “Looking at the issue of service…Learn to serve well and, considering the country’s affairs, I encourage you graduates to aim higher.”
He stated that senior government officials, who are supposed to be stewards of the country’s forest resources, are instead allowing as much as 60% of timber to be exported unregulated and untaxed.
“Members of the Legislature will ask you for your vote but do not want to tell you how they will spend your money,” he noted.
He urged graduates to exemplify the hope and courage for a bright future through their service, which will have lasting impact on them and the country at large.
Making special remarks, Diocesan Administrator, Rev. Monsignor DR Gabriel Blamo Snosio Jubwe, said the school is designed to help students discern their destiny, and hoped that they cultivate the principles of Catholic education and shade their character according to the values of the Gospel.
Rev. Monsignor told the graduates that they have what it takes to shape their destiny and make contributions to improve human society, as they have been prepared to face the many challenges ahead.
“Be our goodwill ambassadors of Stella Maris Polytechnic University; support your alma mater, and most especially be of some help to someone who may need to have their way into your alma mater. We will look forward with greater excitement to see each one of you making a difference as graduates. Go out there and shine like bright stars of excellence and integrity, and be the change you so desire for a better Liberia,” she stated.
