Urban Community Farmers Cooperative (UCFC), a local farmers initiatives aims at providing support to individual farmers through corps planted in Liberia, has harvest its first rice farm on the group’s demonstration site in the Zubah Town Community, Paynesville, outskirts of Monrovia.
Speaking during the harvest on October 2,2023, , Project Coordinator, informed guest and his fellow farmers that the rice farm demonstration site initiative was meant to showcase their potential in the production of Liberia’s stable food, and also the many crops initiatives farming his group has been into for a number of years.
The Urban Community Farmers Cooperative (UCFC) rice farm demonstration site is situated on land inside the Rehab Road, Zubah Town community.
The local farmers’ goal is to improve the social and economic well-being of urban communities through farming.
According to Yawoh, the group’s objective is to increase the production of Liberia’s stable food, poultry and vegetable crops.
The local farmers are 125 in membership. Their mission is to seek solutions and opportunities for improvement in the agricultural sector of Liberia.
At the same time, Project Coordinator Yawoh said he wants the Ministry of Agriculture to provide them with support to achieve their goals as farmers in Liberia.
The rice farm demonstration site harvest was well attended. Alex Mulbah, Moses Davis and Phoebe Kinapoe all represented the Ministry of Agriculture, and were among others who represented their farming institutions.
Mulbah who is the MOA County Agriculture Coordinator (CAC), pledged the Ministry of Agriculture’s commitment in addressing farming initiatives across the country.
He advised that the Urban Community Farmers Cooperative firstly proceed to the government institution responsible for cooperative farming, which he said is the Cooperative Development Agency (CDA).
According to him, the MOA is interested in working with farming groups that are doing the right thing, as per the organic law of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Ministry of Agriculture CAC noted that the ministry is prepared at any time to provide the needed assistance if requested by local farmers in the country.
The rice farm demonstration site’s harvest ceremony went well, with ninety percent of the local farmers, all women, present.
When questioned why women dominated their farming initiative, Project Coordinator Yawoh stated that women globally are result-oriented whenever they do something.
