The Unity Party (UP) has said it regrets a recent allegation against the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by its Campaign Spokesperson, Mohammed Ali, that the regional body received US$150,000 to manipulate the presidential run-off election in favor of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
The allegation made by Ali was contained in a Facebook post on his personal page, but was vehemently dismissed by ECOWAS, which threatened to take legal action if the UP stalwart failed to apologize.
As indicated in the latest press statement issued Wednesday, November 15, 2023 by the opposition party, Mo Ali wrongly accused the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) of receiving the cash to compromise its neutral role in Liberia’s 2023 electoral process.
The Unity Party clarified that at no time was the assertion sanctioned by the party’s standard bearer or the campaign team.
The statement signed by the UP Secretary General, Amos Tweh, noted that the party recognizes and values the crucial role the ECOWAS has played in Liberia’s rebirth and renewal.
“Consistent with the UP’s policy of strengthening Liberia’s participation in ECOWAS, the UP herewith reassures ECOWAS, United Nations and Liberia’s bilateral and multilateral partners of its unflinching commitment to all protocols which Liberia has either acceded to, signed or ratified,” the release added.
“The UP therefore regrets Mr. Mohammed Ali’s assertion, which he is aware does not reflect that of the Unity Party,” the statement observed.
