Ahead of the mid-term senatorial election, former ruling Unity Party (UP) stalwarts last week endorsed the senatorial bid of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) candidate, Representative Jeremiah K. Koung. The group endorsed the Nimba County’s district #1 Representative under the banner, “Council of Conscious Nimbaians”.
Some of the UP Stewarts who endorsed the MDR candidate in Ganta recently included former Nimba County Superintendent, Fong Zuagele; former district #7 Representative, Worlea Saywah Dunah; former Representative candidate, Saye Gbah; Edwin Dopoe and Simmons Kidka. They all played strategic role for the election of Ambassador Joseph N. Boakai during the 2017 presidential and general elections.
Speaking during the ceremony, former Superintendent Zuagele told the gathering that their support to Representative Koung is to reciprocate his support to Ambassador Boakai’s presidential bid in the 2017 election. According to him, Koung abandoned the interest of his Political Leader, Prince Johnson, who supported President George M. Weah, and supported Ambassador Boakai in the 2017 election. He said the pending election is not about compensating someone for contesting two or three times, neither is it about giving job to someone because the person is out of job; as such, Representative Koung is best suited for the post.
Former Superintendent Zuagele emphasized that the development initiatives carried out by Koung during his stay at the Legislature is uncountable and has benefitted many Nimbaians in the county. He averred that the December 8 election is critical and, therefore, it is prudent to provide the direction at this critical political period. He vowed to educate Nimbaians on the importance of electing Representative Koung in the pending senatorial election.
Former Representative Dunah revealed that the Legislature is not for older people, and so Representative Koung, as a young man, is best suited and qualified to serve the people of Nimba. Dunah asserted that Representative Koung as a junior brother is capable and competent to serve the people of Nimba at the Liberian Senate.
He maintained that Representative Koung is an independent man who supported Unity Party’s candidate Boakai during the 2017 election against his Political Leader’s interest. Secondly, the former Unity Party lawmaker continued, Representative Koung independency is recorded as far back as in the 53rd National Legislature, when he affixed his signature on a document to remove Senator Johnson as the county’s Caucus Chairman, even though he belongs to Senator Johnson’s party. As stakeholders of the county, Dunah stated, it is incumbent upon them to provide the best direction in terms of critical decision-making during the mid-term senatorial election.
Responding, Representative Koung applauded the members of the Council of Conscious Nimbaians for taking the critical decision to endorse him ahead of the 2020 mid-term senatorial election. He described the former superintendent and former representative as senior brothers who are more politically experienced, with solid educational background. He pointed out that his endorsement is a boost to his political career, and that he was grateful to the members of the Council of Conscious Nimbaians.
Representative Koung told the gathering that the gathering that “the argument of nephew should no longer be the issue because even Jesus Christ, who shed His blood for our sins was a nephew on this Earth”. According to him, nephew is needed when it is necessary to settle down things; when there is misunderstanding or disunity. Furthermore, Representative Koung claimed that the great United States of America elected a nephew (Obama) as President when the country needed someone to take over the leadership to stabilize the country’s economy.
