A potentially disastrous fire at the Port of Buchanan was swiftly contained thanks to the rapid response of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) Fire Service and the Grand Bassa Fire Service Division.

The fire, which broke out on a vessel docked at the port, posed a significant threat to its operation but was successfully extinguished before it could spread further, averting a major disaster.

According to reports by Bassa-based Empire TV, the incident was first discovered by security personnel at the port, who immediately alerted Port Manager, Kaipay. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Kaipay quickly reached out to ArcelorMittal Liberia for assistance.

Within moments, AML’s fire crew, alongside their counterparts from the Grand Bassa Fire Service, sprang into action, deploying firefighting equipment and personnel to contain the flames. Their swift intervention prevented the fire from escalating, and ensured the safety of the port’s infrastructure and operation.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of both teams, the fire was brought under control before it could cause significant damage.

“We are deeply grateful for the prompt response from ArcelorMittal Liberia and the Grand Bassa Fire Service Division,” Kaipay is quoted by the local Grand Bassa media as saying. “Their brave and efficient efforts prevented what could have been a much more serious situation.

“An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire, and we hope to gain further insight after meeting with the vessel’s captain.”

In the aftermath of the fire, many Buchanan residents took to social media to express their gratitude, praising the brave men and women from AML and the local fire department for their quick response.

The community lauded the teamwork and collaboration that ensured the port’s safety and prevented what could have been a disaster.

The fire incident serves as a reminder of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s commitment to safety and its on-going support for the communities where it operates. With a strong focus on safety and emergency preparedness, AML has always demonstrated dedication to protecting both its assets and the people of Liberia.

In October 2023, a fire broke out on a boat loaded with petroleum products at the commercial port of Buchanan, Liberia. The boat, bound for the southeastern region of the country, posed a significant threat as the flames risked spreading to vital assets at the port.

ArcelorMittal Liberia’s (AML) firefighting crew, including their marine team, quickly responded to an SOS call from the government and joined forces with the Liberian National Fire Service to contain the blaze.

AML’s ground crew, along with a tugboat equipped with a water cannon, worked for several hours to bring the fire under control, preventing damage to the port’s main office and other critical infrastructure.

Former Buchanan Port Manager, Civicus Barsi-Giah, praised AML and the fire teams for their swift and effective response, which averted a potentially larger disaster.

At that time, AML’s Safety Manager, Flomo Williams, emphasized that the rapid deployment of resources and the coordinated effort of the tugboat crew, led by Captain Riad Alchadaydh, played a crucial role in extinguishing the fire.

Captain Alchadaydh highlighted the expertise and readiness of his team, commending everyone involved in the successful firefighting operation.
